Scotty and the Beamers

Main Hall residents noticed some deep bass and drums rocking the first floor Monday night. Upon investigation the culprit was discovered: Scotty and the Beamers practicing for Friday’s night’s show. Just another reminder of the unique Southern Virginia experience, where else can you talk with your professor about Henrik Ibsen and the foundations of Modernism on Monday then see him playing a Fender on Friday? Catch the real performance this Friday at 9 p.m. in the Stoddard Activities Center.

Weather Warning

As you may be aware, a winter storm warning is in effect for our region until 6 p.m. Friday. It is expected that the rain that has fallen today will freeze as temperatures continue to fall. There also may be a mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet tonight. Trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces may accumulate ice.

If there is any adjustment to tomorrow’s academic schedule, we will send an email tomorrow morning and post an announcement at svu.edu by 6 a.m.

We urge extreme caution for those of you who may need to travel or go out in this weather. Be wise and safe.

Retiring: A Fond Farewell to VP Ralls

Friends of Walt Ralls and his wife, Mary Frank, joined for a reception held at President Smith's house yesterday afternoon. Vice President Ralls, one of the early pioneers of the revitalized Southern Virginia College, spent more than 13 years contributing to the mission of the school. We are sad to see him go but so grateful to have had such a great leader-servant in our midst. We will always be grateful for all Walt did for the school, community and church.

Southern Virginia Art Enthusiasts Take a Bite of the Big Apple

On Thursday, a group of Southern Virginia University students, led by art professor Doug Himes, piled into a 15-passenger van to drive to New York City to catch the final days of the Bauhaus Exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. They also saw the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney the Museum, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Frick Collection.

Five states, two tanks of gas and seven cannoli later they returned late Saturday night with full minds and memory cards.

It's a New Semester. What are You Thinking?

The beginning of a new semester is the perfect time to listen to this devotional address from last semester. Board member J. Mitchel Scott gave this address, "It’s a New Semester. What are You Thinking?" at Southern Virginia University on Sept. 11, 2009.

SVU Featured in Arizona Newspaper for Latter-day Saints

There's a great story about Southern Virginia University in the latest issue of Arizona's Beehive Newspaper—an independent paper geared toward Latter-day Saints. Here are some scans of the article along with an ad we ran in the same issue.
